Do I Have Gum Disease or Periodontitis?

alt

Many individuals are confused about their oral health, particularly about gum disease. Using the terms “periodontitis” and “gum disease” interchangeably is a sure sign of this confusion. Dr. Evan Grodin holds dual board certifications in Prosthodontics and Periodontics. This uniquely qualifies him as a specialist in oral health and the aesthetics of your smile. He wants everyone to know about the importance of good dental hygiene, and the ins and outs of gum disease.

What is Gum Disease?

Gum disease refers to all diseases that affect the gums, and to a greater degree, the teeth and other tissues in the mouth. Gum disease has stages of progression, of which periodontitis is only one.

Gingivitis
Gum disease begins when inadequate oral hygiene allows plaque and tartar to build up at the base of the teeth, or the gumline. This irritates the gums, causing inflammation. This is the first level of gum disease, called gingivitis. This stage of gum disease is typically reversible with good oral hygiene and professional cleanings.

Periodontitis
When gingivitis is allowed to continue, the irritated gums begin to deteriorate, and infection can spread to the inner gums and tooth roots. The inflamed gum tissue pulls away from the teeth, allowing pockets where bacteria proliferate and impact the teeth and other oral tissues. Periodontitis can vary in severity from early to advanced, and must be treated by an experienced periodontist like Dr. Grodin.

More advanced periodontitis can cause the body’s immune system to react to the oral bacteria, breaking down bone and connective tissue that secures the teeth and causing them to loosen and fall out.
